Christmas Past

The Christmas Season is finally officially here! (Even though I have had Christmas decor up and music playing for a few weeks now :) I am so excited for Christmas this year. Not to sound too vain, but the gifts I am making this year are pretty cool. However, I can't share them with you yet. At least not until closer to Christmas time. After all my family has to be surprised a little bit. So instead of sharing with you what I am making this year for Christmas, over the next few days I am going to share what I made last year.... cause I made a lot :)

One of the first Christmas presents I made last year was for my husband. I really want to make him a sign that had our unofficial wedding song on it. (We love our official one too, but well, this one just seem to fit us more at the time) As I was trying to figure out how to do this, I came across this idea on Pinterest.

I loved the idea of having the song lyrics on canvas. The only down side was that Laura from The Steen Style literally hand wrote the whole thing. Although hers came out awesome, I was nervous that I would mess up and have to keep starting over again. That's when I came up with my plan.
Here is what I used:
  • adhesive vinyl
  • canvas
  • my choice of toil paint ~ I chose a gray
  • my Cricut
  • favorite Cricut cartridge
Now my origanl plan was to paint the canvas and then put the vinyl lettering on the sign. Luckily I tried sticking the vinyl on the canvas before I painted it. They did not stick together. So I changed my plan up :)
This is what I ended up doing
  • I used a pencil and lightly drew lines across the canvas so that the letters would be straight.
  • I printed out the versus of the song that I wanted on the vinyl using the cricut.
  • I then used the vinyl as stickers, and placed them on the canvas.
  • Now here is the tricky part. Since the vinyl doesn't stick very well, gently dab the paint on the canvas and over the lettering. It takes about two coats
  • Now just peal the letters off and ta da a beautiful sign.
Its not perfect but Jake and I love it. The letters does not have clean and crisp lines since it is on canvas, other then that it is great. If you want perfect letters you might want to try this on wood. Here are a couple of pictures of our sign.

* Side note: you can always use stickers instead of the vinyl and the cricut
